Sunrise at Yavapai

On my last day in the Canyon I headed out to Yavapai Point for the sunrise. I was very startled to find elk roaming around the area in the darkness. I was quickly joined by many Canyon visitors who were also anxious to see the spectacle that is a sunrise in the Grand Canyon. It was a spectacle, and we all observed it in reverent silence.

Our first morning in the canyon was memorable. It was the first time we saw sunlight cast in areas of canyon over time. It was a dance of shadows and light; of softness and sharpness. Photos do not do it justice.

Hermit's Rest Marker

We made it to Hermit's Rest at the western end of the South Rim. While the views from this location were just as spectacular as the others, I remember being surprised by the number of trees that surrounded the landscape. It was still beautiful though. On this trip I stayed on the Rim, but next time I want to go into to canyon on day hikes.
